Having pain and stiffness in your shoulder? You might want to see your doctor about a diagnosis called Frozen Shoulder! Because this diagnosis is a gradual onset of pain, stiffness and eventually loss of use in shoulder joint, many people begin to self treat this pain with painkillers. But pain blockers will NOT fix frozen shoulder, although physical therapy can and HAS! 

So what is frozen shoulder? The body typically will experience the loss of flexibility and range of motion due to constant inflammation in the shoulder joint. Usually frozen shoulder patients will begin to feel stiffness and pain in the shoulder and these symptoms will gradually get worsen until patients can no longer maintain healthy posture or move the shoulder joint without feeling pain. Signs gradually increase for months and healing can take up to one to two years to become fully rehabilitated with treatment. In some cases, frozen shoulder can correct itself in 3 years, but in other cases loss of range of motion can become permanent if not rehabilitated consistently and effectively. 

Many people that suffer from frozen shoulder cannot actually pinpoint a specific injury that caused the onset of stiffness and pain. Frozen shoulder typically happens in more women than it does men, commonly from the age range of 50 years old to about 60 years old and is possibly due to hormone imbalances. Frozen shoulder is also diagnosed in about 10% to 20%  of patients that have diabetes. Those that are immobile, suffer from thyroid disease, have had a stroke, or that have Parkinson's disease are susceptible to suffereing from frozen shoulder as well.

How can you "defrost" your frozen shoulder? Many times patients will attempt to resolve frozen shoulder pain with painkillers, but this is not what the shoulder joint really needs. To treat frozen shoulder, a rehabilitation program is best effective when it includes the following goals:
